Bangladesh batting coach Jamie Siddons said on Tuesday that he is impressed with the way Tamim Iqbal batted against Sri Lanka in the two-match series opener at Chattogram.

Host dominated over Sri Lanka during the third day of the first Test after Tamim Iqbal scored a scintillating hundred while three more batsmen completed their respective fifty at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Tuesday.

Tamim struck 133 off 217 balls – his first Test ton since February, 2019 – before his retiring out while Mahmudul Hasan Joy (58), Mushfiqur Rahim (53 not out) and Liton Das (54 not out) all scored fifties to take Bangladesh score to 318-3 at stumps of second day’s play.

Bangladesh are still trailing the visitors by 79 runs with seven wickets in their hands and they will be looking to take a first-innings lead over Sri Lanka, who made 397 runs in their first innings, today.

‘’Tamim’s performance was fantastic and plenty of more runs left He’s not out now and can comeback in when we think he’s fit. The discipline today is exactly what we asked for,’’ said Jamie.

‘’After two days in the field and batting like he did in the heat. Running between the wickets it takes a lot out of you. I can understand that he cramped up. After a good night of taking some food and fluids, I think he will be fine tomorrow,’’ he said.

‘’Tamim was very disciplined today. He didn’t go fast. He looked like Angelo Mathews actually. Very patient in taking ones when they were there,’’ he said.

‘’Only hitting fours when they were handed to him on a plate. He didn’t really take on the bowlers like I have seen him before,’’ he said.

Jamie added that they have a game in their hand as they still have a game in hand and now he is looking forward how their batters takes on their opponent on the fourth day.

“Litton scores quite quickly. We know what Shakib does. Tamim is still to come. We have some players who can put pressure on Sri Lanka tomorrow. They will be tired. We have given them a taste of their own medicine, keeping them out there in the heat. We will do it again tomorrow. I think we are 70-odd behind now, so we are well within striking distance in the first innings,’’ said Jamie.

‘’The wicket is very good. I hope we can put a score on the board and hope there is a lot more turn on offer since we have good spinners who can put them under a whole heap of pressure,’’ he concluded.
