Bangladesh T20 skipper Mahmudullah is all set to be axed as leader in the shortest format.
Mahmudullah came under scrutiny both as a player and a leader following his prolonged lean patch and the team’s successive losses in the shortest format.
Bangladesh Cricket Board high-ups confirmed Daily Cricket on Thursday that he will be axed as the captain of the T20’s squad from immediate effect.
Big wigs of BCB is expected to sit with Mahmudullah on Friday to discuss about his future as they are expected to announce the team for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour for the white-ball series.
The right handed batsman arrived from West Indies earlier in the morning on Thursday.
It was learnt that Mahmudullah will have to pave ways as a captain for someone else. BCB approached Shakib al Hasan to take over the captaincy in the tour of Zimbabwe but he refused to take it as he is not available but looks certain to lead the T20’s squad from the Asia Cup. In the Zimbabwe tour Nurul Hasan or Liton Das, who is expected to be Shakib’s deputy when he takes over will lead the T20’s side in Zimbabwe.

As a captain, Mahmudullah raised quite a few eyebrows in the second and third T20Is against West Indies as he decided not to use Mosaddek Hossain despite his taking a wicket-maiden over.
In the third game, Mahmudullah decided to complete the full quota of Mosaddek but didn’t bring Shakib and the decision was taken largely due to the fact Nicholas Pooran and Kyle Mayers were batting at that time (as per his match-up theory left-arm spinners won’t be successful against left-handed batsmen).
Bangladesh made highest score of 215 runs while lowest was 73 runs in between the 43 games while they scored at an average of 7.34.
Bangladesh accumulated 5765 runs during his tenure as T20’s captain while their average score is 134 runs that include scores over 160 runs on seven occasions.
Bangladesh batted first in 24 innings during this time frame and posted 3270 runs averaging 136.25 runs while they managed to give their opponents target over 160 runs on five occasions batting first since Mahmudullah took over. Apart from his captaincy, Mahmudullah’s failure to shine with the bat also looked to be hurting the team for quite some time.
Since the last World Cup debacle, Mahmudullah’s highest score has been 22 against West Indies in the last T20I.
His last fifty came against Papua New Guinea and since then he has played 13 innings without any major contribution.
