Former Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe Mortaza, Tamim Iqbal and other national stars can take in   in the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Cup, said DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam on Monday.

Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal, selector Habibul Bashar and volleyball player Harshit Biswas will be actively campaigning for the event.

‘’There will be three players in the XI that can come from anywhere while there will be eight players coming from respective ward and in that case if they( Mashrafee , Tamim and others) they can play in the tournament,’’ said Atiqul.

Mayor Atiqul inaugurated the event at a city hotel in the capital on Monday attending the programme as the chief guest while Unique Hotel and Resort Chairman Mohammad Noor Ali and Runner Group Chairman Hafizur Rahman Khan were also present on the occasion.  

The Mayor Cup will be held in three disciplines - football, cricket and volleyball this year. A total of 54 wards from DNCC will compete in the football and cricket tournament, a citizen living in any of these wards can play for his respective locality in this tournament.

Every three wards will form a volleyball team that makes a total of 18 teams to battle it out for the trophy of the volleyball tournament.

The matches will begin from November 15.The theme of this sports carnival is “get busy in sports, stay away from drugs”.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said: “National players will actively take part in the tournament while eight amateur players along with three free players will also participate.”    

“Sporting activities will refrain the youth from drugs and crimes. We are starting the Mayor’s Cup with three events. The Mayor’s Cup will be held next year in a bigger way,” he said.

DNCC has involved former national cricket team captain Khaled Mashud Pilot as the technical director of the cricket event while former football star Sheikh Mohammad Aslam is carrying out the same role as the football event. Bangladesh Volleyball Federation joint general secretary has been appointed as the technical director of the volleyball event.
