Ishan Kishan struck a record-breaking double hundred while Virat Kohli scored his 72nd international ton as India outplayed Bangladesh and clinched a massive 227 runs victory in the third and last one-day international at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Saturday.

Ishan, who came in place of regular skipper Rohit Sharma after he sustained a thumb injury in the last match, struck 210 runs off just 131 balls with 24 fours and 10 sixes – the highest ODI score by any batter against Bangladesh – while Kohli made 113 off 91 balls as India posted a sensational 409-8 in their 50 overs.

The total was India’s fourth-highest ODI total overall while it was the highest-ever total against Bangladesh in this format.

In reply, Bangladesh could only manage to score 182 runs before getting bowled out in the 34th over with Shakib Al Hasan making the highest 43 runs for the host team.

Despite the hammering defeat, Bangladesh secured the three-match series 2-1 having won the opening two games in Mirpur by one wicket and five runs respectively.

On Saturday, India, who was sent into bat first, lost opener Shikhar Dhawan (three) early in the innings before Ishan and Kohli put up a massive partnership of 290 runs for the second wicket stand – the highest ever ODI partnership record against Bangladesh in any wicket – to take the game out of Bangladesh’s reach.

Ishan, who completed his fifty off 49 balls, took only 85 balls to reach his maiden ODI ton before he became more aggressive and completed his double ton off just 126 balls to become the youngest and quickest to reach the landmark.

Kohli, meanwhile, was lucky at the start of the innings as he was dropped on one by Liton Das – the player who took a stunning catch to dismiss the same batter in the series opener – but this time he dropped a sitter and the veteran utilized the opportunity well by scoring his first ODI ton since August 2019.

The partnership was finally broken by pacer Taskin Ahmed (2-89 in nine overs), who was one of two changes for Bangladesh in the game alongside Yasir Ali.

Bangladeshi bowlers did tremendously well in the later part of the innings to restrict India to just over 400 runs after they conceded only 70 runs and took five Indian wickets during that period.

Washington Sundar and Axar Patel made 37 and 20 runs respectively for India while apart from Taskin, Shakib and Ebadot Hossain also chipped in with two wickets each in a day where all the bowlers were at the receiving end due to the Ishan-Kohli onslaught.

Match scorecard: Bangladesh vs India, 3rd ODI

Bangladesh were never in the chase as they lost wickets at regular intervals and in the end, they suffered their second biggest defeat by runs in this format.

Bangladesh’s biggest ODI defeat came against Pakistan in 2000 when they lost the game by 233 runs while chasing a target of 321 runs in Dhaka.

Ishan was adjudged player of the match while Mehidy, who scored 141 runs and took four wickets in the series, was named player of the series.

Both sides will now play a two-match Test series, starting in Chattogram on December 14, and it will be part of the ongoing ICC Test Championship.
